Abstract

In this article, I examine how intersection between national identity, gender and race appears in the discourse of a group of Brazilians who studied for their doctor´'s degree abroad. I analyse how their condition as foreigners highlighted a Brazilian identity marked by gender and race, marks which were experienced ambiguously. Specifically, I discuss the meaning of denying, as most people did, that they looked Brazilian. Theoretically, I deal, therefore, with the contrastive features in the elaboration of national identities and with they way in which gender and race become constitutive of a national figure.
