Abstract

The present article examines the results of in-depth interviews conducted as part of the dissertation “Venezuelans with Autism in Refugee Situations - The Intersectional Approach to the Topic in Humanitarian Journalism and Media Interventions,” which investigated the reality of Venezuelan families seeking refuge in Brazil with autistic children. The study focused on these families’ perceptions of media coverage related to people with disabilities, with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and the practice of Humanitarian Journalism and media interventions. The research was motivated by the growing number of forcibly displaced people worldwide, with an emphasis on South America, where the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated 89.3 million displaced people globally, 12 million of whom are people with disabilities. The methodology involved interviews with guardians of autistic children aged 18 months to 17 years, born in Brazil or Venezuela, recruited through social media. The study employed in-depth interviews to address the experience of forced displacement and the challenges of accessibility and inclusion for these families.
